At the Maritime Academy, Bahir Dar, you can train to become a Deck Rating and then follow a career as a Member of the Deck Department with World-Renowned Commercial Vessel Operators.

 

The Deck Ratings Course

The Ethiopian Maritime Training Institute’s Maritime Academy in Bahir Dar (EMTI) is currently conducting a program to train Ethiopian males with civil engineering, mathematics and physics qualifications to become Deck Ratings. This is a new course. [The Academy already trains Marine Mechanical Engineers, Electro-Technical Officers and Engine Room Ratings in collaboration with the Bahir Dar University]. All graduates of our courses are employed by international shipping organizations from around the world.

About our Deck Ratings Course

  1. The first course will be presented in Manila, Philippines after an introductory basic maritime safety programme at the Maritime Academy campus in Bahir Dar. Duration of the training will be from the middle of January to the middle of March 2015.
  2. Ratings will have the same living conditions as students at the university.
  3. The cost of training will initially be carried by EMTI. A loan agreement will be concluded on course to re-pay the study loan once you are earning money at sea.
  4. The course qualifies successful students to act as a team member in the deck department. The work will include steering the ship; keep a look-out on the bridge; be a member of the team controlling the operation of the ship; be part of the seamanship team; do cargo handling; operate deck equipment and machinery; and operate rescue boats.
  5. The deck rating can be the first step in eventually being selected and trained as a deck officer.
  6. The specified learning outcomes of the course, in line with the Standards of Training Certification and Watch keeping Code are:
    1. a. Section A-II/4: Ratings forming part of a navigational watch; and
    2. b. Section A-II/5: Ratings as able seafarer deck.

 

Requirements

  1. Male Ethiopian citizens.
  2. To be eligible, you need at least a qualification in civil engineering, or a qualification which includes Mathematics and Physics.
  3. You must be younger than 26 years of age.
  4. You must have a good command of both verbal and written English.
  5. Be medically fit to serve at sea according to ILO/IMO guidelines.
  6. Be willing to sign a waiver of medical confidentiality.
  7. Applicants must be “free and clear” from any training-related commitment with any government organization including Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopian Shipping Lines. Selected applicants may be required to produce release letters from their respective organizations if they are employed elsewhere.
  8. A copy of your 8th grade national examination certificate is essential.
  9. A copy of the academic qualification certificates showing your competence in Mathematics, and Science [Physics] is essential.
  10. -Copies of work experience testimonies will be an advantage.

Applicants will have to pass the following screening process before joining the course:

  1. Written examination.
  2. Interview panel.
  3. Medical examination.

  6. Personal preparations and briefings – 1 – 14 February 2015.
  7. Course in Manila, Philippines – 16 Feb to about 15 March 2015.
  8. Return to Ethiopia.
