The “5 Year Undergraduate” Maritime Engineering Program

Upon completion of the Training Center in 2014, EMTI shall offer a parallel training program for current engineering students at Bahir Dar University (BDU).

EMTI’s parallel training program will focus on active Bahir Dar University students to provide them with a 5-year undergraduate degree under EMTI's supervision while they also obtain mechanical or electrical engineering degrees from BDU.

Cadet Selection Criteria (5 Year Undergraduate Program)
- Qualifying first year GPA score at Bahir Dar University (BDU).
- Complete an EMTI Entrance Examination.
- Interview with the EMTI Selection Committee at the end of the first year of studies at BDU.
- EMTI administered medical examination required for acceptance.
Selection will be determined based on the results of the above listed criteria, as well as the applicant’s career motivation, interest in working internationally and their recommendations.
Curriculum and Training (5 Year Undergraduate Program)
- During the first year, prospective Cadets study pre-requisite courses at Bahir Dar University (BDU) to develop the skills necessary for beginning EMTI’s Marine Engineering Courses.
- Prospective Cadets apply to EMTI during the first year at BDU and begin Marine Engineering Studies during their sixth semester.
- Cadets receive over 2,000 hours of Marine Engineering Curriculum, including pre-requisite courses, basic and advance STCW training.
- The Maritime Academy is highly regimented and fully separated from other programs at BDU.
- Cadets are expected to commit to training for 3 full years.
